2014 Crew Leader Training: Plant it forward!

By Ian Bonham

“I have gotten more back in personal satisfaction than what I could have ever imagined.”-Doug “Cast your leaves to the wind and go for it. FOT is all about bark and no bite, good times.”-Pat “There just is no comparison to the satisfaction of digging one’s hands in the soil.”-Andrea

As leaves change and dazzle our grey sidewalks with splashes of color, Friends of Trees is preparing for our 25th planting season. Our biggest need this season? Hundreds of new Crew Leaders to help guide thousands of planters at our Saturday tree plantings.

The Crew Leader role is an easy, fun and fulfilling way to connect with your community and learn about trees. It really is an awesome feeling to head out and share the feeling of planting trees with someone new. You’ll learn valuable leadership skills and how to plant the trees that will help define our communities for decades to come. We have more than 80 public planting events scheduled this season – that’s a lot of help we need!

You’ll wear the Friends of Trees vest at weekend plantings, receive the respect and admiration of the volunteers on your crew, and snag one of those coveted green Tree Team t-shirts. And you’ll love the great food we have at every event. There are almost 400 active volunteer crew leaders working with Friends of Trees. Join this dynamic, fun and energetic team by signing up for a one-day training.

Crew leaders guide small groups of volunteers to plant trees safely, correctly, and have fun doing it. We ask that you volunteer for four planting events over the course of our planting season (October – April). You can choose which dates and schedule them in advance at your convenience.

All it takes is a passion for trees and community-building, and we make it easy by pairing you up with an experienced Crew Leader who will act as a mentor throughout your first season.

“Being able to help with a seasoned crew leader in an assistant role until I felt ready to take the plunge totally helped to ease my nerves. At the plantings, all I felt was support and encouragement.”

– Joanie Beldin, GSI Crew Leader
