Summer Organic Land Care Workshop at Willamette University

ladybug_oregon_tilthOn Friday, July 15, from 8:30 am to 5 pm, Oregon Tilth will offer an intensive workshop focusing on Organic Land Care (OLC) principles and applications, including soil and plant health, integrated pest management, stormwater management, and sustainable design. The workshop will be held at Willamette University in Salem and will include both classroom time and outdoor, hands-on learning and observation.

Anyone interested in attending is invited to register online at Oregon Tilth. The $80 registration fee includes lunch and a copy of the Oregon Tilth Organic Land Care Policies and Standards. Continued education hours are available for most associations, including the Oregon Landscape Contractor’s Board.

Speakers and Topics will include the following:

Jim Toler–Soil Health Maintenance

Jim founded Willamette Organics in 2003 to serve the farming and landscape industries. He has been instrumental in helping Oregon Tilth develop the Accredited Organic Land Care program. He attended the Northeast Organic Farming Association’s organic land care training, and he wrote the initial draft for the Oregon Tilth Organic Land Care Policies and Standards. He will present material related to soil health, including soil testing and soil biology.

Dean Wentworth–Plant Selection for the Organic Landscape

Dean is the botanical garden and greenhouse curator at Willamette University. He has been with the university since October 1999. He graduated from Oregon State University with a degree in horticulture, with an emphasis in soils and plant pathology.

Mickey Cochrane–Willamette University Field Study

Mickey is a groundskeeper at Willamette University. He is also an Oregon Tilth Accredited Organic Land Care practitioner. Willamette University has been managing its landscapes organically for almost five years now. In this presentation, we will hear about the successes in organic management on the campus.
