Some neighborhoods in Portland are luckier than others when it comes to tree canopy. Irvington, among those lucky neighborhoods, got a little luckier Saturday when Friends of Trees planted several dozen street trees in an end-of-year project.

Every year at the end of the planting season, Friends of Trees plants additional trees in Portland as an Earth Day event.

This year, 48 street trees were planted in Northeast Portland, most in vacant planting strips along Knott Street.

The Kinship House and Greater Faith Baptist Church in Northeast Portland also received street trees Saturday.

As a U.S. Forest Service study reports, street and yard trees add thousands of dollars to home values, one reason of many why home owners all across Portland plant trees with Friends of Trees.

As a local resident on ML King Jr. Blvd. in Northeast Portland, Friends of Trees is proud to plant in our neighborhood and make a small contribution to the city’s urban canopy in honor of Earth Day.
