With two plantings already behind us, Friends of Trees has begun to tally our numbers for the 2010-11 planting season.

Following our October 16 Green Space Initiative planting at Mary Woodward Wetlands and our October 23 Green Space Initiative planting with the Portland Waldorf School along the I-205 multi-use path near SE Division, the first-of-season numbers are in:

  • 113 volunteers helped plant
  • 640 trees and shrubs

Of the October 23 planting, Portland Waldorf School parent and organizer Fred Schwoebel said, “It was a very satisfying feeling to stand back and see our collective efforts transform a bare slope into what will grow into a beautiful corridor designed for folks to experience on bikes and on foot.”

You have a chance to help tomorrow, too. If you’d like to join other like-minded people—in sun or rain—we’ll be at Durham City Park from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., doing what we do best—planting!

Tomorrow’s restoration project involves planting small trees and shrubs. People of all ages are welcome. As always, our friendly crew leaders will guide small groups of planters, and they’ll demonstrate how to plant and make themselves available to help throughout the morning.

Check out our planting calendar to find a planting or two you want to join. All plantings begin with coffee, pastries, and friendly greetings. In addition to planting guidance, Friends of Trees provides tools, gloves, and lots of fun.
