Join us & Mayor Adams at our Plant It Portland! Kickoff, or plant with us at King City or I-205

Plant It Portland Yard Signs

Since our planting season began in October, more than 500 volunteers have planted 3,488 trees and shrubs with us. You can add to the growing number of beneficial trees and native plants in our metro area by helping us plant this weekend.

Mayor Sam Adams will join us at this Saturday’s kickoff for our Plant It Portland! campaign in the Buckman, Hosford-Abernethy and Richmond neighborhoods. Our bicycling crew will plant trees with him along SE Harrison at 11 a.m. The planting is sponsored by New Seasons Market.

Friends of Trees is launching the three-year Plant It Portland! campaign as part of Portland’s Grey to Green Initiative. The campaign is the most ambitious street tree planting campaign in Portland to date. It’s also fun! You’ve probably seen the campaign’s colorful artwork. Please be a part of the campaign by buying a bargain tree to plant in your yard or planting strip.

Our Plant It Portland! kick-off planting is just one of three opportunities you have to help this weekend. Our Green Space Initiative program is hosting the second of 11 public plantings this year along the I-205 multi-use path—at Holman Hill South (10600 NE Holman Street). If you want to bring young children with you, or if you have mobility challenges, you’ll find our Green Space planting in King City a better choice, since the I-205 site is steeper than most of our planting areas.

Our King City planting is located in King City Park near Tigard and involves a partnership with Clean Water Services and King City. Our I-205 planting at Holman Hill South is part of a three-year I-205 greening project with ODOT, Metro, East Multnomah Soil & Water Conservation District, and many others, including Portland General Electric, sponsor of Saturday’s planting. This information sheet about the greening project provides dates for all of this year’s plantings.

Of course, if you can’t join us this weekend, we will have multiple plantings most weekends between now and April. During our 21 years, we’ve planted more than 395,000 trees and shrubs. This January, we will plant our 400,000th!

The numbers are only a small part of the story. You, the planters, make everything happen. You don’t need to have any experience planting, you can be any age, and you can have any level of abilities. There’s always a role for you. Visit our calendar to learn where to show up at 8:45 a.m. to register and eat some pastries with your follow planters.

We hope you’ll join us soon!
