During the 2011-13 soccer seasons, Portland Timbers fans will have an extra reason to be happy when the Timbers score goals at home games.

Through the Timbers’ “Score a Goal, Plant a Tree” partnership with Friends of Trees, for every goal the Timbers score during a home game, the team will plant a tree in the Portland community. Timbers staff members are already preparing for a planting with Friends of Trees in January.

The Timbers chose Friends of Trees as one of three Pillar Partners for the coming seasons. Other Pillar Partners are Big Brothers Big Sisters and Portland YouthBuilders.

The “Score a Goal, Plant a Tree” partnership is part of the Timbers’ “Stand Together” community investment platform for the upcoming Major League Soccer season. It represents the team’s commitment to its fans and the community where those fans live. The Timbers will stand by the Portland community, “both on and off the field.”

“This is just one small example of our organization’s core commitment to community service,” said Timbers owner and president Merritt Paulson. “Community service is a cornerstone of the Timbers mission.”

The Timbers are committed to improving the quality of life for children and families throughout the greater-Portland area through focused giving and extensive community outreach. Through the Portland Timbers Community Fund, in partnership with Alaska Airlines, Burgerville and Portland General Electric, more than $100,000 will be awarded each year to nonprofits that focus on K-12 education, youth soccer-related projects, childhood obesity, and environmental awareness and activism with youth and families.
