2012 Neighborhood Tree Steward Training coming up fast!

Fall_Color_Sugar_Maple — Just like the changing of the leaves, 'tis the season for the Neighborhood Tree Steward training.

The Neighborhood Tree Steward Program, now in its 15th year, is slated to be better than ever this season! The five-week training series, comprised of seven educational sessions with local tree experts and professionals, begins next Tuesday evening, September 25. SIGN UP NOW to learn how you can help maintain and advocate for trees in your neighborhood.

Topics covered include: tree biology, pruning, tree identification, urban trees, and urban forestry management. Class meetings will be dispersed across the city to give participants the opportunity to witness different renditions of Portland’s urban forest. The final session will coincide with the annual Dig-It! tree planting event on Saturday, October 27 and will include a hands-on tree planting demonstration of proper tree planting methods and how to work with volunteers.

After the training, attendees are encouraged to share what they’ve learned during the course by volunteering in their own neighborhoods as tree/urban forest advocates. Past graduates have helped organize neighborhood tree inventories, tree plantings, pruning parties, and more. Step into one of these roles or propose a project you’ve identified or dreamt up.
