PP&R Urban Forestry volunteers inventoried Portland's trees (Teri Ruch)

By Melissa Tiefenthaler

An amazing volunteer-driven tree inventory has hit an impressive milestone. Volunteer teams in six Portland neighborhoods completed an inventory of 25,000 trees! Congratulations to Concordia, Eastmoreland, Kenton, Overlook, Sellwood-Moreland, and St. Johns for this incredible effort.

Portland Parks & Recreation’s Urban Forestry created a customized final report for each neighborhood based on their inventories with maps of where new trees can be planted and lists of existing trees. These reports will help each neighborhood create its own Neighborhood Stewardship Plan.

If this sounds interesting for you and your neighborhood, you can apply to conduct a tree inventory in 2012. If you live in one of the neighborhoods with a completed inventory, you can join your neighborhood’s tree team to help develop the stewardship plan. Contact information for your neighborhood tree team is listed in your neighborhood’s final report.

Thank you to everyone involved in this effort. Volunteers dedicated 1,800 hours to the inventory so far, and the effort shows. Outstanding work!

This project is led by Portland Parks & Recreation’s Urban Forestry and is supported by a grant from the East Multnomah Soil and Water Conservation District.
