Last Saturday, more than 300 volunteers helped Friends of Trees reach yet another milestone: We planted more than 5,500 trees and native plants at five plantings!

The slide show below includes photos from our Green Space Initiative plantings at Clatsop Butte, Errol Heights, and Barrows Meadow, and from our Neighborhood Trees planting in the Hillsdale Neighborhood in SW Portland.

Neighborhood Trees Manager Whitney Dorer was especially impressed by a service learning group from Rieke Elementary School at the SW Portland planting.

“By the end of the morning,” she said, “this really smart young girl on our crew was spewing facts that I had only briefly mentioned in our first tree demo. And she was planting like a pro. It was inspirational!”

Kudos, too, to members of the Hoodview Chapter of the Oregon Hunters Association and their families, who composed more than half of the planting force at the Clastop Butte planting.

Our March 5 plantings received support from The Oregonian, Portland General Electric, East Multnomah Soil & Water Conservation District, Portland Parks & Recreation, the Johnson Creek Watershed Council, and Portland Bureau of Environmental Services.

We have 20 more plantings ahead—four of them this Saturday! Please join us for these March 12 plantings:

Alameda, Grant Park, Irvington, and Sabin Neighborhood Trees planting—sponsored by Backyard Bird Shop and supported by Portland Bureau of Environmental Services.

Argay, Parkrose, Parkrose Heights, Russell, and Sumner Neighborhood Trees planting—sponsored by IKEA-Portland and supported by Portland Bureau of Environmental Services.

Forest Park Green Space Initiative planting—sponsored by REI and supported by Portland Parks & Recreation and the Forest Park Conservancy. (Please pre-register for this planting.)

Ibach Park Green Space Initiative planting—supported by Tualatin River Watershed Clean Water Services and the City of Tualatin.

People of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities are welcome! Just dress for the weather and wear sturdy shoes. We’ll provide gloves, tools, guidance, and breakfast treats.
