Another chance to inoculate elms this Saturday

Help some elms in Laurelhurst this Saturday. (FoT file)

If you missed your chance to inoculate elms in Ladd’s Addition a few weeks ago, you have another chance to help this weekend.

On Saturday, July 10, volunteers will inoculate 40 elms in the Laurelhurst neighborhood.  Help is needed to inoculate the trees before the forecasted high temperatures slow down the trees’ transpiration systems.

Friends of Trees’ neighborhood coordinator for Kerns, Doug Lovelace, is looking for a few tree lovers. He’s starting an early crew at 6 a.m.  and a second crew at 8 a.m.  With enough people on hand, the job should be done by 10 a.m.

As many people know by now, the American Elm is vulnerable to Dutch Elm Disease–a serious threat to the survival of these majestic urban trees.  However, they can be protected with annual inoculations, a process that is a bit labor intensive.

Did you know that the vast majority of elms in Portland are inoculated by volunteers?  Every summer, people throughout the city come together on weekend mornings for hands-on tree care to save these great trees.

If you’re interested in volunteering this Saturday, please contact Doug at [email protected] or call 916-207-4277.

Thank you!
