Volunteer as a Group!

Late Spring and Summer is a slower time for our tree planting and tree care activities. We rarely hold events May-September (what you see below is all we have scheduled, if any). This calendar will be updated in late Summer with our Oct-April planting events. Hope to work with you then!

Thank you for your interest in volunteering with a group! Friends of Trees events are great for team-building, having fun, and making a community impact together. We love working with groups and have a wide variety of planting season event options (Oct-April).

To keep our events accessible to as many people as possible, we’re piloting a Corporate Volunteer program. Company groups are asked to donate $50 per volunteer to Friends of Trees, ensuring your team is supported alongside our broader community of volunteers. To process this donation and get your group registered, please reach out to Corporate & Business Relations Manager, Sam Erman: [email protected]

Which event is best for your group?

Your group has a unique set of goals and needs. Before you sign up, make sure that the event type you register for is a fit!

Green Space

Green Space events take place in parks or natural areas, where we plant hundreds of native trees and shrubs in one general location. Look for the green events on the event calendar, below.

Group Size: Groups of 10-15 can usually stay together; larger groups will be split into different planting crews in the same vicinity.

Workload: You’ll plant smaller native trees and shrubs, often manageable for youth to plant on their own. Terrain is usually flat and often muddy; some sites have steeper slopes—check for details on the event calendar.

Youth-Friendly: Recommended for ages 6 and up.

Neighborhood Trees

Neighborhood Trees events happen in urban neighborhoods, where volunteers plant trees along sidewalks and at people’s homes. You’ll meet at a central location, then head out in planting crews to nearby homes. Look for the purple events on the calendar.

Group Size: Crews can include 3–5 people.

Workload: You’ll plant larger trees (6–10′ tall, up to 40 lbs) at several different homes. Personal transportation is recommended; carpooling may be possible. Please let us know if this is a barrier for you to participate.

Youth-Friendly: Best for ages 10+. There are more limited tasks for younger participants.

To Sign up a Group:

  1. From the calendar below, choose an event and click to view details. Then click the ‘Registration Form’ link to sign up.
  2. On the form, enter your group size in the ‘# of Volunteers’ field and submit. You’ll receive an automated confirmation email. Please register 1 or more weeks in advance, some of our events do fill up.
  3. Is your group more than 15 people? Please let us know the event you’re interested in: [email protected]/503-595-0213.  We’ll check that there is sufficient room (our registration system is not automated to this extent, unfortunately).  Then we’ll register you!
  4. The week before the event, our Volunteer & Outreach team will follow up to confirm your group size and share event logistics.

*If your group registers as individuals, we won’t know that you wish to stay together. You will likely be split up onto multiple crews. If this is okay, great! If you prefer to be on the same crew(s), please let us know so we can accommodate your interest: [email protected]
