Pruning Leader Training

Thank you for joining us as a Pruning Leader! This is an amazing step to take if you are interested in deepening your knowledge of urban trees, and working on the skill and art of shade tree pruning.

- TRAINING INFORMATION

Welcome to the Friends of Trees Pruning Leader Training Portal! This training contains the following:

 

  • NOTE: Please complete the training review before your In-Person Training on either Sat Oct 21st in Vancouver or Sat Nov 18th in NE Portland.  Following your In-Person training you’ll receive an invitation to sign-up online for future pruning events during the 23-24 season.

- TRAINING SCHEDULE

FRIDAY, OCT 13

TRAINING OPENS. This training is designed so that you can take it at your own pace. We expect it will take most people about 1 – 1.5 hours.

FRIDAY, NOV 17

TRAINING WINDOW CLOSES. Reviews must be submitted by 11:59 pm on the training deadline!

- WELCOME & AGENDA

This training is presented by Friends of Trees staff members Litzy Venturi, Andrew Land, and Rudy Roquemore. It is comprised of 5 main components:

  1. FOT, CTC, & Environmental Justice [10 min]
  2. Tree Biology & the Importance of Tree Care [15 min]
  3. Pruning 101 [26 min]
  4. Volunteer Logistics [8 min]
  5. Training Review [10 min]

In this module, we will go over everything you need to know about Friends of Trees, and introduce you to the principles of Environmental Justice. It is broken down into four sections:

This module will provide a foundation for understanding the mechanisms that exist within a tree, and will introduce you to why and when we prune. It is broken down into seven sections:

The EDI Toolkit is a great educational resource to review prior to your first pruning event! It includes readings and provides a lot of tools that you can implement while you are working with others!

Pruning Leader Checklist

The Pruning Leader Checklist is a timeline of the pruning day. It also outlines the tree pruning process, step by step. This will be on your clipboard at your events for reference.

Emergency Protocol

The Emergency Protocols provides a step-by-step action process in the event of an emergency. It also contains non-emergency numbers for every municipality we prune in. This will be available as a resource on your clipboard at your events.
