The best protection for sidewalks is to plant the right tree in the right place. However, extra protection can be taken by installing root barriers at the time of planting. Root barriers guide roots downward and away from infrastructure and therefore may help prevent sidewalk damage and reduce sidewalk trip hazards. Root barriers are required by Portland Parks and Recreation Urban Forestry for all planting sites less than 4 feet wide, and are recommended for all other street tree planting sites. Root barriers are panels or rolls of rigid plastic either 12" or 18" high and a few millimeters thick. The rolls are cut, or panels lock together, to achieve desired length, which is 6' long.

Characteristics: A cultivar of the red maple and the silver maple, this tree features some of the strong features of its parents, such as solid structure, attractive form, and great fall color (red maple), and adaptability and rapid growth (silver maple).
Growing Conditions: Easily grown in well-drained, medium to wet soils, in full sun to part shade. Established trees have some tolerance for drought conditions
Uses: The steep upright branching of this tree makes it a great candidate for a street tree along a busy street.

More Information: NOTE BEFORE PLANTING: Maples are very popular planting choices, and they represent a disproportionately large percentage of trees planted in many cities. If your heart is set on a maple, go for it! But we recommend choosing a different species to increase the diversity of tree canopy in your community. A more diverse urban forest means less susceptibility to pests and disease for your trees and your neighbors' trees.
