Characteristics:
Broadleaf deciduous shrub, or small tree, often multi-stemmed.

Growing Conditions:
Sun to part shade. Best with well-drained soil. Drought tolerant, does well on infrequently watered banks. Tolerant of alkaline and acid soils. Hardy to USDA Zone 6.

Beautiful early-flowering small tree.

Flowers:
Flowers pea-like, 1/2 inch long, purplish-pink, appear before leaves, blooms February-April

Leaves:
Leaves alternate, 1.5-3 inches long, round/kidney-shaped, dark green above, pale below

Bark:
Smooth, brown bark with lighter lenticels.

Native range includes Utah, Arizona (common in the Grand Canyon National Park), and especially California.
