The best protection for sidewalks is to plant the right tree in the right place. However, extra protection can be taken by installing root barriers at the time of planting. Root barriers guide roots downward and away from infrastructure and therefore may help prevent sidewalk damage and reduce sidewalk trip hazards. Root barriers are required by Portland Parks and Recreation Urban Forestry for all planting sites less than 4 feet wide, and are recommended for all other street tree planting sites. Root barriers are panels or rolls of rigid plastic either 12" or 18" high and a few millimeters thick. The rolls are cut, or panels lock together, to achieve desired length, which is 6' long.

Interesting Flowers
Characteristics: Stately, deciduous tree with striped bark, unusal leaves, and striking green and orange flowers.
Growing Conditions: Prefers full sun and well-drained soil; best with summer water. Stressed trees often attract aphids in our climate.

Height: 80' at maturity
Width: 40' at maturity
Shape: Pyramidal to oval with a magnificent, large canopy
Flowers: Tulip-shaped flowers that are showy but high in the tree, with yellow-green petals and an orange corolla.
Leaves: Glossy, four-lobed leaves forming a tulip shape. Leaves are bright green above and paler below, turning yellow in fall.
Bark: Light gray-green with white grooves or patches. Smooth when young turning ridged and furrowed in diamond-shaped patterns as tree matures.
