The best protection for sidewalks is to plant the right tree in the right place. However, extra protection can be taken by installing root barriers at the time of planting. Root barriers guide roots downward and away from infrastructure and therefore may help prevent sidewalk damage and reduce sidewalk trip hazards. Root barriers are required by Portland Parks and Recreation Urban Forestry for all planting sites less than 4 feet wide, and are recommended for all other street tree planting sites. Root barriers are panels or rolls of rigid plastic either 12" or 18" high and a few millimeters thick. The rolls are cut, or panels lock together, to achieve desired length, which is 6' long.

Characteristics: Native, deciduous tree; nice fall color and small berries that attract wildlife. Named purshiana after Fredrick T. Pursh, an important early North American plant collector.
Growing Conditions: Shade-tolerant, but does well in sun. Best in moist, well-drained soils.
Uses: Berries are attractive to birds and other wildlife.
Height: 30' at maturity
Width: 25' at maturity
Shape: Erect, oval with graceful, sparse branching.
Flowers: Umbrella-shaped clusters of small, green to yellow flowers in summer.
Leaves: The tree's elliptical green leaves become yellow, orange, red, or purple in fall. Leaf surfaces are wavy.
Bark: Thin, smooth and burgundy when young. Grayish-brown, somewhat scaly on mature trees.
