The best protection for sidewalks is to plant the right tree in the right place. However, extra protection can be taken by installing root barriers at the time of planting. Root barriers guide roots downward and away from infrastructure and therefore may help prevent sidewalk damage and reduce sidewalk trip hazards. Root barriers are required by Portland Parks and Recreation Urban Forestry for all planting sites less than 4 feet wide, and are recommended for all other street tree planting sites. Root barriers are panels or rolls of rigid plastic either 12" or 18" high and a few millimeters thick. The rolls are cut, or panels lock together, to achieve desired length, which is 6' long.

Fall Colors
Characteristics: Striking variegated leaves with pink and white edges set this beautiful tree apart from other beeches.
Growing Conditions: Does best with some shade in the summer. Avoid planting in areas that receive hot afternoon sun/western exposure; prone to scorched leaves if not sheltered from the hot sun or dry winds. Well-drained, acidic soil best; does not do well in compacted soil.
Uses:
Height: 40' at maturity
Width: 25' at maturity
Shape: Broadly oval
Flowers: Flowers in spring, but not ornamentally important.
Leaves: Variegated green, white and pink-tinged leaves. Good fall color. Beech trees tend to keep their dead leaves over winter.
Bark: Smooth, silver bark.
More Information: May attract aphids in spring/early summer.
