The best protection for sidewalks is to plant the right tree in the right place. However, extra protection can be taken by installing root barriers at the time of planting. Root barriers guide roots downward and away from infrastructure and therefore may help prevent sidewalk damage and reduce sidewalk trip hazards. Root barriers are required by Portland Parks and Recreation Urban Forestry for all planting sites less than 4 feet wide, and are recommended for all other street tree planting sites. Root barriers are panels or rolls of rigid plastic either 12" or 18" high and a few millimeters thick. The rolls are cut, or panels lock together, to achieve desired length, which is 6' long.

Characteristics: Light-textured, deciduous tree with delicate, white flowers in the spring and vibrant orange leaves in the fall. Dominant central leader supports strongly upward-oriented scaffold branches.
Growing Conditions: Prefers full to part sun; best in moist soil, but fairly tolerant. Not best choice for high stress environments.
Uses: Nice small street tree.

Width: 20' at maturity
Shape: Upright oval
Flowers: Pure white blooms smother a delicate latticework of twigs in spring.
Leaves: Green foliage turns orange in the fall.
Bark: Medium gray-brown, fairly smooth with light striping.
More Information: Eastern North America; Kansas to Newfoundland, south to Arkansas and Georgia. Cultivar developed at J.Frank Schmidt Nursery in Boring, OR.
