The best protection for sidewalks is to plant the right tree in the right place. However, extra protection can be taken by installing root barriers at the time of planting. Root barriers guide roots downward and away from infrastructure and therefore may help prevent sidewalk damage and reduce sidewalk trip hazards. Root barriers are required by Portland Parks and Recreation Urban Forestry for all planting sites less than 4 feet wide, and are recommended for all other street tree planting sites. Root barriers are panels or rolls of rigid plastic either 12" or 18" high and a few millimeters thick. The rolls are cut, or panels lock together, to achieve desired length, which is 6' long.

Fall Colors
Characteristics: Tidy and densely-crowned tree covered with small, prominently-veined leaves that turn golden yellow in fall; very dense appearance.
Growing Conditions: Prefers full sun with well-drained soil, but is tolerant of wide range of light and soil conditions.
Uses: Tree is heat and drought resistant with no serious pests or diseases. Requires little maintenance; effective as a screen.
Height: 40' at maturity
Width: 30' at maturity
Shape: Dense, compact, and oval with a symmetrical formal appearance.
Flowers: Male and female catkins. Female catkins are slightly longer.
Leaves: Dark green, deeply-veined elliptical leaves with serrated edges that turn yellow gold in fall. May persist into winter.
Bark: Ornamental, smooth, and steel-gray with lines.
