The best protection for sidewalks is to plant the right tree in the right place. However, extra protection can be taken by installing root barriers at the time of planting. Root barriers guide roots downward and away from infrastructure and therefore may help prevent sidewalk damage and reduce sidewalk trip hazards. Root barriers are required by Portland Parks and Recreation Urban Forestry for all planting sites less than 4 feet wide, and are recommended for all other street tree planting sites. Root barriers are panels or rolls of rigid plastic either 12" or 18" high and a few millimeters thick. The rolls are cut, or panels lock together, to achieve desired length, which is 6' long.

Growing Conditions: Prefer drier, warm, inland locations, but can tolerate moderately wet soils.
Uses: Edible fruit, self-fertile. Comice pears have a full, round shape with a short neck and stem. They are most often green and sometimes have a red blush in spots. This succulent pear has a custardy flesh and a mellow sweetness that makes it an elegant dessert pear.

Flowers: Five-petalled, white flowers up to 1-1/2
Leaves: Deep green, oval-shaped, with long petiole.
Bark: Dark gray cracking into small, blocky plates with age.
More Information: It�s blight-resistant and is referred to as the "connoisseur�s" pear. This pear is self-fruitful in most climates of the western US or can be planted with a Bartlett pear for better fruit.
