Characteristics:
Medium to large tree with open, irregular shape, showy white flowers, and large seed pods that persist through winter.

Growing Conditions:
Tolerant of wide range of soils, but prefers deep, moist, fertile soil. Sun or partial shade. Drought tolerant. Medium to fast growth rate.

Uses:
Wood has been used for railroad ties.

60' at maturity

Width:
30' at maturity

Shape:
Spreading branches and an irregular crown. The bole may be straight but is generally crooked.

Flowers:
Very showy, white, bell-shaped upright clusters appearing in late spring. Yellow or purple spots may be apparent that do not affect tree health.

Leaves:
May be opposite or whorled, pinnately veined. Large in size: 5-12

Bark:
Rigged and furrowed with reddish-brown scales.

Native to wide range of United States.
