The best protection for sidewalks is to plant the right tree in the right place. However, extra protection can be taken by installing root barriers at the time of planting. Root barriers guide roots downward and away from infrastructure and therefore may help prevent sidewalk damage and reduce sidewalk trip hazards. Root barriers are required by Portland Parks and Recreation Urban Forestry for all planting sites less than 4 feet wide, and are recommended for all other street tree planting sites. Root barriers are panels or rolls of rigid plastic either 12" or 18" high and a few millimeters thick. The rolls are cut, or panels lock together, to achieve desired length, which is 6' long.

Characteristics: Broadleaf deciduous tree with striking bark, showy white flowers, and colorful fall leaves. Pyramidal to oval shape.
Growing Conditions: Avoid planting in locations with southern or western exposure and hot afternoon sun.
Slow growing. Prefers full morning sun to partial shade and moist, well-drained soil. Does not tolerate wind or drought and requires on-going establishment watering. A beautiful tree that can require maintenance to truly thrive.
Uses: Beautiful ornamental tree.

Shape: Conical and generally small and bushy
Flowers: Attractive white, camellia-like flowers with five petals appear in early to mid-summer.
Leaves: Dark green oval serrated leaves, a shiny, paler green below. Turn to a vibrant red in fall.
Bark: Very attractive flaking, patchy bark revealing grays, browns and reds.
