Thank you for joining us as a Green Space Crew Leader!

Our Green Space Program plants upwards of 40,000 native trees and shrubs every year, and we couldn’t do it without the help of dedicated volunteers like you. Thank you for volunteering your time to support this work! We will always strive to be a welcoming and safe place for everyone, regardless of age, ability, race, religion, gender identity, sexual orientation, economic status, or any other identity that makes us unique. We really appreciate that you are taking the time to complete these online training modules at home, and we look forward to meeting you on Sat, January 27 at the In-Person training event! After you complete the virtual training and review questions, you will join Friends of Trees for an in-person planting event, where you will have the opportunity to plant and ask questions alongside experienced Crew Leaders. 

  • NOTE: You must complete the training and review prior to our in-person training event on January 27.

- TRAINING SCHEDULE

SATURDAY, JAN 13

VIRTUAL TRAINING OPENS. The virtual portion of this training is designed so that you can take it at your own pace. We expect it will take most people about 45 min – 1 hr.

FRIDAY, JAN 26

VIRTUAL TRAINING CLOSES. Reviews must be submitted by 11:59 pm on the training deadline!

SATURDAY, JAN 27 [9 am - 2 pm]

CREW LEADER TRAINING PLANTING EVENT. Following the completion of the virtual training, you will join Friends of Trees staff in Tualatin to participate in your first planting event as an Assistant Crew Leader. You will have the opportunity to plant alongside experienced leaders and ask questions along the way! Event details can be found in the Resources & Support section below.

In this module, we will go over everything you need to know about Friends of Trees, and our Green Space Program. It is broken down into four sections:

The Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Toolkit is a great educational resource to review prior to your first planting! It includes readings and provides a lot of tools that you can implement while you are working with others!

EDI CHECKLIST

This checklist provides some helpful tips for creating an inclusive space, working with youth, and being an effective leader. It will be available for you every planting day to review!

SPECIES ID CARDS

These cards will be available for you to utilize as an educational resource on planting day! We recommend that you check them out so that you can familiarize yourself with the plants we will be working with prior to your first planting!

Acknowledgment is the beginning. Acknowledgment—and the research required to do it with integrity—should be an invitation to deeper analysis, relationship, and action.

12:00 pm: Demonstrations & Planting alongside FOT Staff

The morning portion of this training will be indoors at Tualatin City Services. When we break for lunch, we will migrate to Jurgen’s Park (1 mile away) for the outdoor planting portion of our training. If needed, transportation between the two locations will be available.

Please remember to dress for the weather! This means closed-toe shoes (waterproof if possible), layers, and don’t forget your rain gear! Restrooms will be available throughout the training day.
