Tokyo Sky Tree not really a tree

A new TV tower is being constructed and will soon be the tallest structure in Japan.

The Tokyo Sky Tree–scheduled to be finished next year—will have a height of 634 meters and looks nothing like a tree.

Most cities in Japan have TV towers and they are all called what they are: towers.

What possible connection does this TV tower have to a tree?

An English explanation from the Sky Tree Web site:

The “tree” symbolizes a place where people gather and share their hearts. Under the tower that soars high up into the sky like a large tree, a new environmentally-friendly town will appear as people from around the world gather to create a new culture.
