About Us

Friends of Trees empowers people to improve the natural world around them through a simple solution: Planting Trees. Together.

Friends of Trees was founded in 1989 by a community member who loved trees and started planting them injumping Portland neighborhoods.

Today, Friends of Trees is a nationally recognized, regional leader in improving the urban tree canopy and restoring sensitive natural areas—through programs delivered by thousands of volunteers. Friends of Trees greens our region while building community.

How we do it

Neighborhood Tree Plantings. We organize the planting dates, deliver the trees, dig the holes, and make it affordable. Volunteers just sign up, show up, and get to know the neighbors while making neighborhoods more beautiful.

Green Space Restoration. From the edge of the Columbia Gorge to the farmlands of Washington County, our Green Space program restores natural areas, increases habitat, improves watersheds, and plants trees in such quantities (about 1,000 seedlings and native shrubs per planting!) that, when mature, there will be measurable, significant impact on our region’s air and water quality.

Tree Care. We water. We prune (about 1,200 trees a year!). We weed. We mulch. We visit and assess. We want all those trees we plant to make it and to thrive, so we spend summer months caring for the trees planted in natural areas and visiting & assessing newly planted neighborhood trees.

Since Friends of Trees was founded by Richard Seidman in 1989, we have planted 600,000+ trees and native plants. In our last planting season 6,252 volunteers donated 41,540 hours to help plant 55,943 trees and native shrubs during 126 planting and tree-care events, in 17 cities, 6 counties, across 2 states.
