Canada Red Chokecherry
Prunus virginiana 'Canada red'
Characteristics: The red leaf variety of the American chokecherry. Known for straight trunk, full-round crown, bright red leaves, nicely distributed branching. The green leaves produced in the spring turn to dark-purple by midsummer.
Growing Conditions: Shade tolerant but produces the best fruit in full sun. Suckers often. Tolerant of a range of soil types and is somewhat drought tolerant after establishment.
Uses: The fruit can be processed to make jams and jellies.
Flowers: White flowers in spring
Leaves: green foliage fading to purple by midsummer
Planting Strip Width: 3-4', 4-6', 6-8', and 8+ with power lines
This is an excellent wildlife tree. Suckering may be a problem.
