If you missed our Pedalpalooza bike ride on the I-205 multi-use path in June, you’ll have another chance to see the new trees.
Next month Friends of Trees Green Space Manager Logan Lauvray will lead another bicycle tour, called the Equity Ride, that will include part of the path crossing through the Montavilla neighborhood.

Since 2007 local and state transportation agencies have wrangled with the canopy complications surrounding planned improvements of Powell Blvd., also known as U.S. 26.
There are a little over $1M in improvements planned—including enhanced pedestrian and bike crossings at key intersections—but only about $400,000 worth have been approved and funded.

The Coalition for a Livable Future will host a regional sustainability summit Thursday, including breakout sessions that feature Friends of Trees planting partners.

Congratulations to Metro Council President David Bragdon, who received the 2010 Excellence in Urban Forest Leadership Award from The Arbor Day Foundation. Bragdon received the award for his role in preserving and restoring forest and park land in the Portland-metro region.

March 20 marked the fifth in a series of community tree plantings along the I-205 Multi-Use Path. It also marked another milestone: the 249th tree planting at which Conan Harmon-Walker volunteered.

Beaming with enthusiasm, 18-year-old Lavette Lacy of Northeast Portland happily spent a sunny Saturday morning along the Interstate 205 Multi-Use-Path near Airport Way planting trees and shrubs.

Volunteers at the March 20 Friends of Trees planting along the I-205 corridor in Southeast Portland ranged from toddlers to retirees. They came from diverse backgrounds and groups, including nonprofits, regional and statewide agencies, nearby neighborhoods, high schools, and local businesses.

The tree tally records continue to climb for Friends of Trees and there are still four full weekends of planting opportunities.
A quick look at the numbers so far from the biggest planting season in 20 years:

About 23 Schnitzer Steel employees enjoyed the fine weather last weekend and helped green the I-205 Multi-Use Path in Lents.
Friends of Trees and its Green Space Initiative program, in partnership with ODOT and Metro, are planting thousands of trees along the transportation corridor over the next three years.

Friends of Trees and its Neighborhood Trees (NT) program planted 178 trees the Saturday before Valentine’s Day, 20 of which went in on Oregon Department of Transportation land at N. Michigan and N. Skidmore.
The majority of street and yard trees planted went to homes in the Boise, Eliot, Humboldt and King neighborhoods.
